Tree trimming done the right way
Good tree trimming is not just cutting branches. Every cut you make on a tree is a permanent wound, and bad cuts - flush cuts, stub cuts, topping cuts - invite decay that the tree carries for the rest of its life. Sierra Crest follows ANSI A300 pruning standards on every job, which means correct cut locations, balanced reductions and only the live tissue your tree can actually afford to lose.
Our certified climbers spend their days in Sierra trees and know how Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, white fir and incense cedar each respond to pruning. We trim for safety, for health, for views and for fire mitigation - usually all at the same time.
When your trees need a trim
Mature trees around your home should get a thoughtful pruning visit roughly every three to five years. You should also consider a trim if you see any of these: large dead branches in the canopy, limbs growing into your roofline, low limbs blocking the driveway, branches rubbing on power conductors, heavy one-sided growth after a neighbor's tree came down, or a split or co-dominant trunk that could fail under snow load.
Young trees benefit even more from early structural pruning. One careful visit in the first decade of a tree's life can prevent the kind of weak unions and codominant trunks that later cause expensive failures.
How a Sierra Crest pruning visit works
We start with a free estimate. The arborist on the walk-through will explain what each tree needs and, just as importantly, what it does not. You will get an itemized written quote with the scope of work clearly laid out - never a vague "we will trim the trees" line item.
On the day of the job, our climbers ascend each tree, working from the top of the canopy down. Brush goes through the chipper, larger wood is cut into rounds, and the entire work area is raked, blown and walked. You will see the difference in the canopy immediately - more light through the branches, cleaner shape, no dead wood - without that severely "topped" look that signals an inexperienced crew.
Tree trimming for views and defensible space
Many of our Tahoe clients ask for view-enhancement pruning - opening up a window to the lake or the ridge through the canopy without removing the tree. This work has to be done carefully so that the tree stays balanced and healthy. We will tell you honestly what is possible without harming the tree and, in some cases, recommend selective removal of less valuable specimens instead of over-pruning a great one.
Trimming is also a key piece of defensible space. Lifting the canopy six to ten feet off the ground, removing ladder fuels and breaking up continuous canopy contact between trees dramatically reduces wildfire risk. We routinely combine trimming and defensible-space work into a single visit.
