Why defensible space matters in Lake Tahoe
Every Lake Tahoe homeowner lives inside a wildland-urban interface. The same forested setting that makes the South Shore beautiful also makes it vulnerable. Defensible space is the buffer between your home and the wildland fuels around it - the trees, brush, pine needles and dead wood that a wildfire would otherwise carry straight to your structure.
California state law and Cal Fire require defensible space around homes in fire-prone areas, and most South Shore jurisdictions actively inspect for it. More importantly, properly maintained defensible space is one of the single biggest factors in whether a home survives an ember storm or an approaching crown fire.
The three defensible-space zones
Defensible space is organized into three zones, each with its own goals. Zone 0 is the first 5 feet around the home and should be kept essentially non-combustible - no bark mulch against the foundation, no firewood stacked on the deck, no juniper bushes hugging the siding. Zone 1 extends from 5 to 30 feet and focuses on lean, clean and green landscaping with generous spacing between plants. Zone 2 extends from 30 to 100 feet (or the property line) and is where most of the tree work happens: spacing tree crowns, removing ladder fuels, and clearing dead-and-down material.
Our crews are trained to read your property and translate those zone rules into a practical plan. We do not clear-cut and we do not chase the most expensive scope possible. We focus on the highest-impact work: ladder fuels under the canopy, dead trees, crowded stands and the vegetation closest to your home.
What a defensible-space visit includes
Most jobs begin with a free property walk. We will identify hazard trees, mark trees recommended for removal versus limbing, and discuss what should change in Zone 0 and Zone 1. You will get an itemized written estimate covering the work to be done.
On the work day, our crew arrives with chippers, climbing gear, chainsaws and dump trucks. We limb up mature trees, remove flagged hazards, clear brush, rake pine needles and duff away from the foundation, and chip everything on-site. All debris is hauled off (or left chipped as mulch in the forest if that better fits your property goals).
Annual maintenance is the key
Defensible space is not a one-time project. Tahoe forests drop needles and grow brush every season, and last year's clean property can be next year's hazard. We offer annual maintenance plans so your defensible space stays in compliance year after year - usually a much smaller visit than the initial clean-up.
Cal Fire and TRPA compliance
We work routinely with homeowners preparing for Cal Fire inspections, TRPA review and insurance-driven defensible space requirements. If your insurance carrier has sent you a defensible-space notice, bring it to the estimate and we will design the work to address each specific item flagged.
