Why grind the stump?

Once a tree is down, the stump is the part nobody wants to think about. But left in place it slowly rots, attracts carpenter ants and termites, sends up suckers and gets in the way of anything you want to do with that part of the yard - new turf, a patio, a fence line or another tree. Grinding it out the same week as the removal keeps the project tidy and finished.

Sierra Crest grinds stumps as a standalone service or bundled with any removal. If we are already on site with the chipper running, adding a stump or two is inexpensive and gets the whole job wrapped in one visit.

How deep we grind

Standard grinding takes the stump down 6 to 12 inches below grade, which is plenty for re-seeding, sod, mulch or general landscaping. If you are planning to pour concrete, set a foundation or plant a replacement tree in the same spot, we go deeper or fully excavate the stump and major roots so nothing interferes with the new work.

Tight access and steep Tahoe lots

Many South Shore stumps sit in fenced backyards, behind decks or up steep granite slopes. We bring grinders sized to fit the access - from compact walk-behind units that go through a 36-inch gate to larger self-propelled machines for open lots. If a stump can be reached, we can grind it.

Cleanup and backfill

We rake the grindings into the hole as backfill, or haul them off and bring in clean topsoil if you are putting in turf right away. Either option is included in the estimate so there are no surprises.
